Frequently asked questions
Why was Humanists West set up?
Humanists West was set up to provide a member-run organization that provides social, educational and outreach services to the non-religious community of Galway. Traditionally the Church has provided these services; we endeavor to provide these services, minus the dogma and mysticism. We are freethinkers seeking fellowship: a sense of connection, shared goals and meaningful friendships.
What is Humanists West
Humanists West is an organisation which is dedicated to supporting the needs of the non-religious of Galway. We aim to provide a space for freethinkers of all ages to meet and to run events and projects they are interested in. If you have ideas on what you would like to see the Humanists West run then simply click here.
Who can attend Humanists West
Humanists West is open to all the non-religious of Galway, so if you are young, old, a student, a parent and consider yourself non-religious, atheist, agnostic, skeptic, humanist or a freethinker of any description then you are more than welcome to come along. If you are not sure where you stand on religion then you are more welcome to come along too. Humaninsts West aims to be a family friendly organisation and parents are welcome to attend with their children.
What does it cost?
To cover the cost of the room booking and refreshments, a €5 donation is suggested but by no means compulsory. We all have different financial situations after all.
What do you do?
At the moment, our events mostly centre around our monthly meetings but we hope to offer a more varied experience of Humanist orientated events in 2013.
Where do you meet?
Galway Lawn Tennis Club
Threadneedle Street
Galway
Co. Galway
Every last sunday of the month at 12 noon. See the calendar for details
What is Humanism anyway?
The British Humanist Association launched a website recently that we think is top notch and offers a "Simple Guide to Humanism". For a great overview of Humanism you could start here. For a more in-depth look at Humanism a good starting point is the Amsterdam Declaration 2002.
